The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) announced the suspension of its humanitarian operations in Houthi rebels-controlled areas in order to protect the safety of its staff.

This decision, according to WFP, came after several of its employees were detained. It affirmed its continued efforts to support civilians outside conflict zones wherever possible.

WFP indicated that it is working with international and local parties. They aim to find an urgent solution to release employees and resume vital operations.

UN experts warn that the continued suspension of food aid could exacerbate the humanitarian crisis. It could also increase malnutrition rates among children and the elderly. Experts stress that cooperation between all parties is crucial to avoid a greater humanitarian catastrophe.
