United Nations General Secretary special envoy for Yemen Hans Grundberg ended another visit to Oman’s capital, Muscat, where he met with senior Omani officials, Houthi chief negotiator and representatives of the diplomatic community, the U.N..
The Special Envoy reiterated his strong condemnation of the recent, and reportedly ongoing, wave of arbitrary detentions of UN personnel by the Houthis in Sana’a and demanded that all UN, NGO, civil society, and diplomatic mission personnel be immediately and unconditionally released In these meetings.
He stressed that these detentions, as well as the forced entry into UN premises and seizure of UN property by the Houthis, seriously endangers the UN’s ability to operate in Yemen and deliver much-needed assistance.
He also emphasized that these actions put all UN staff and operations at serious risk and underscored the fundamental obligation to respect and protect the safety of UN personnel.
The Special Envoy urged all to prioritize finding sustainable solutions for Yemen while underlining that the UN remains a steadfast partner of the Yemeni people on their path toward peace.
